HATDS Invites All to Traditional Dance Nights

St Andrew's is the new location for Houston Area Traditional Dance Society's (HATDS) regular bi-monthly dance events! Contra dancees are held in the Parish Hall on second and fourth Saturdays beginning at 7:30 pm. St Andrew's members are warmly invited. Please come and enjoy some music and dancing! Comfortable clothing and comfy low-heeled shoes are recommended.

Contra dancing is a type of American folk dancing that originated in New England, with roots in English, Scottish, and Irish traditions. For those who would like a little more instruction, we offer a newcomers' session at 7:30 pm on the evenings of our regular dances--with the main dance at 8 pm. You don't need to bring a partner, and if you do bring one, be ready to dance with others. It's a contra dance tradition to be sociable and dance with different partners throughout the evening. That's also a good way for the newer dancers to learn from those with more contra dance experience.

The environment is smoke-free, alcohol-free, safe, and family-friendly. This is a community dance, similar to the barn dances of bygone days. The dances are targeted for dancers about 10 years old and older. Kids younger than 9 or 10 may do very well, or could be a danger to themselves and others; it depends on the child.

Admission is $8 for the general public, $6 for members of HATDS. Younger kids are free and students age 16-25 with ID are $3. When you come the first time and pay full price, you will receive a card that allows you to come three more times at the members' price. After that, we hope that you will become a member and continue to receive the discount.
